A guide to the traffic system and driving in Malaysia

Malaysia follows the traffic system of the United Kingdom and some major commonwealth countries where cars move on the left side of the road. Cars are right hand drive models while under certain special circumstances, left-hand drive vehicles are allowed. If you are from a country whose traffic system practices the right lane drives, then it might take a while for you to get used to the system here. As a pedestrian, you will need to be aware that if you are crossing the road, you will need to look left first and then look right because the immediate vehicles will be coming in from your left side instead of the right. The best way to get around is to follow the traffic lights meant for the pedestrians which are very much standard across the world.

If you intend to drive in Malaysia, it would be slightly more challenging because unless you are very used to the left lane driving system, you will have difficulties adapting to a new environment. For those who are coming in from the same system, driving would be quite easy as the roads are wide and pretty much standard. If your country uses a different system, then you must be extremely careful when driving and particularly when making turns as they are on the opposite sides as compared to your home country.

The speed limit in the highways of Malaysia is 110 km/h where you can drive over that limit although the traffic police might hold speed traps and road blocks and issue you a summon if you are caught. Take note that if there is no sign, it does not mean you are allowed to do it. This means that if you do not see a ‘No U-Turn’ sign, it does not mean that you can do a U-turn. Only if you see a sign that allows you to do so that you should.

Among some of the mannerisms when driving in Malaysia is where you must be aware that honking is widely considered to be rude. While it might be common in your country, press the horn only if you very angry or you would accord much stares and sometimes the drivers might swear at you. Hence, you should only honk if it is absolutely necessary.
